Layering Clothing

The big issue involving spring and fall fashion is figuring out the temperature! The temperature can change drastically in one day, and you have to be ready for that! Layering during these times of year is crucial. As spring is creeping up on us, now is the perfect time to experiment.

Layering can be tricky due to the jacket and shirt having to be cohesive with the whole outfit in case the jacket is open or comes off. When layering, there is a lot to take into account. Here are a few of my layering tips.

  • Sandwiching/color blocking helps break up the outfit. By color blocking, you connect accessories or pieces of clothing with something else in between. For example, matching your bag with your shoes and then incorporating a contrasting jacket. Or matching the jacket with the boots and incorporating a contrasting bag. Sometimes the contrasting piece can even be a scarf! The contrasting piece helps to break up the same colored pieces.

  • To go along with the first tip, play around with textures and patterns! Mix a knit sweater with a leather jacket or denim jacket. Mix a flannel-style jacket with a solid shirt and pants. However, when just starting, limit the texture or pattern to one piece per outfit to prevent it from looking messy, and experiment as you get more comfortable. My favorite way to incorporate different textures and patterns is through my bags. It is great for beginners or even more experienced stylists.

  • Mixing silhouettes is one tip people overlook! Depending on what you are mixing, you can change the style of the outfit with just ONE piece of clothing. Only one! This allows you to keep the same outfit when changing from day to night. Changing one item whether it be the jacket, pants or even shoes can alter the end result completely in different ways.
