Setting my face using a dry sponge and powder has been my recent go-to way to set my make-up. It gives an amazing smoothing effect while setting my make-up to last all day. This technique packs the powder into my skin without placing an obscene amount to the point of flaking.
Your first question might be why a make-up sponge over a powder puff? Personally, I have found the powder puff packs too much powder onto my face. The end result for me is dry, flaking skin, especially under my eyes. No matter how much a wipe off afterwards and even pat the extra powder onto my palm before applying, it is always the same result. I do not recommend using a powder puff it you have dryer skin.
The sponge application is able to absorb some of the powder allowing a lighter application, while pressing the powder into the skin at the same time. Using this technique, I do not have to wipe away excess product after application. Key tip when doing this, is to press the sponge with the powder on it, into the palm of your hand before applying for even more smoothness. By doing this, you are packing the powder into the sponge more preventing any unevenness when setting. Also, make sure this sponge is only used for powders and stays dry!
Another key tip is to find a sponge that is able to be used with powders and liquids. Most sponges do not allow this versatility so using a sponge that is catered to only liquids, unfortunately, will not give the same effect. These types of sponges are more porous causing more powder to be absorbed and be absorbed unevenly. My personally favorite is the Total Face Makeup Blending Sponge by E.L.F that is meant to be used for both liquid and powder products.
This technique sets my skin all day without having to touch-up majority of the time!
